The Tax Assessment and Collector Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Administration has started taking strict action for property tax recovery. The municipality has so far collected around INR 1200 crores from property tax. There is still a recovery of three and a half thousand crores of rupees and the municipal administration has started a crackdown against the big arrears of property tax.


The administration has prepared a list of 142 big arrears in 24 administrative divisions and the assessment and collection department has started issuing notices for property tax recovery. Meanwhile, the arrears owed by 10 big defaulters to the Municipal Corporation has reached to 147 crore 24 lakh 72 thousand 18 rupees. 


The assessee and collector department of the municipality has started online distribution of property tax payments for the current financial year from February 27. Also, the municipal administration has appealed to pay the property tax till March 31. The assessment and collection department has planned various measures to achieve the property tax collection target in the current financial year. The assessment and collection department is working to achieve the objective of tax collection.

Only a few days are left for the end of the financial year 2023-24. Therefore, a very meticulous planning has been done for recovery of arrears. Tax collection work is going on at the departmental level on office days as well as on holidays by visiting the taxpayers in person. Through contact through social media, as well as flat-wise tax collection in the Housing Society, the work is going on. Tax payers are being appealed to pay taxes by March 31, 2024 through loudspeakers, prominent banners and awareness through local cable. Some of the defaulters have handed over cheques, demand drafts (demand drafts) to the municipal authorities.


The municipal administration has appealed that the citizens should immediately deposit the arrears of property tax to the municipal corporation. Public awareness, repeated appeals, sending SMS to mobiles to inform the defaulters about payment of tax. However, even after that, the tax collection department has started taking strict action against property owners who do not pay tax. The municipal administration has announced the names of the ten biggest tax paying companies.

Property tax is an important source of income for the municipal corporation which provides various services and facilities to the citizens. The municipality has revised the property tax target to INR 4500 crore for the current financial year. So far only INR 1200 crore has been recovered and INR 3300 crore has to be recovered within a month.
