The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to introduce a dedicated maintenance system for several historic structures in South Mumbai, including the iconic Flora Fountain.
The civic body is preparing to appoint a private agency to handle the regular upkeep, cleaning, and preservation of heritage fountains and statues located mainly in the Fort area.
As part of the proposal, six heritage fountains and 16 statues across South Mumbai will be maintained under a contract estimated at around INR 2.37 crore. Apart from Flora Fountain, the project is expected to include other prominent landmarks and historic monuments in the city’s heritage district.
The selected agency will be tasked with carrying out routine cleaning, removal of dirt and algae, maintenance of lighting arrangements, and preventing damage or misuse of the structures. Regular upkeep of fountain tanks, grills, and surrounding premises has also been included in the plan to ensure the monuments remain in good condition throughout the year.
Located at Hutatma Chowk, Flora Fountain is among Mumbai’s best-known heritage landmarks. The 19th-century structure has undergone restoration work several times in the past due to damage caused by pollution, leakage, and ageing.
Civic officials believe that appointing a dedicated maintenance agency will help ensure continuous conservation of heritage sites rather than relying only on occasional restoration work. The proposal is likely to be placed before the civic standing committee for approval.
