A viral video showing two women in burqas allegedly being stopped from entering Mumbai’s BMC-run R.N. Cooper Hospital has triggered a controversy over religious freedom, security protocols and discrimination.
The incident reportedly took place near the hospital’s maternity ward when the women had gone to visit a relative. In the video circulating on social media, one of the women, identified as advocate Jahanara Shaikh, is seen questioning a female security guard after allegedly being told that she could not enter the hospital wearing a burqa.
According to Shaikh, security personnel cited concerns over the possible theft of newborn babies as a reason for restricting entry. She questioned why her religious attire should prevent her from entering the hospital and argued that appropriate security checks could be carried out by female security personnel instead.
The video has since sparked a political and social media debate, with questions being raised over whether hospital security measures can justify restrictions on religious attire.
The controversy has now prompted action from the hospital administration. Reports say a show-cause notice has been issued to the security guard involved, while sensitisation workshops are also being conducted for hospital staff to prevent similar incidents and promote respectful treatment of visitors and patients.
The hospital has not publicly confirmed all details of the incident shown in the viral video. The episode has nevertheless reignited debate over balancing security requirements at sensitive hospital areas with individual dignity, religious freedom and equal access to public healthcare facilities.
