On Wednesday, February 24, Minister Aslam Shaikh said that a lockdown in Mumbai hasn’t been ruled out. This was after the state’s review of Mumbai has shown that the COVID-19 cases has been on the rise and hence action is needed.

“We don’t want a state like the previous lockdown when people were inconvenienced but if set rules aren’t being followed than what other option do we have? So, people should understand that it’s because the rules aren’t being followed that the government is contemplating such curbs,” the minister observed.

Shaikh also stated that despite the government’s appeal, citizens have stopped following the COVID-appropriate behaviour in public places. “The cases in Mumbai have been rising for the past many days. We are keeping a close watch and haven’t ruled out a lockdown since the rules and regulations aren’t being followed strictly in the city,” said Shaikh.

On Tuesday, February 23, Mumbai reported 643 new COVID-19 cases, 501 recoveries and three deaths taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 3,20,531. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 7,536 active cases and 3,00,681 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,449 in the city.

Moreover, the BMC has tightened the rules to control the number of patients and is taking strict action and penalties from those not wearing masks in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases.
