A demand has been raised for the introduction of a dedicated coach for pregnant women in Mumbai’s suburban local trains. BJP leader Prabhakar Shinde has urged railway authorities to consider the proposal, citing the hardships faced by expectant mothers during daily travel.
At present, Mumbai local trains provide reserved compartments for women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Although pregnant women are permitted to travel in the Divyangjan coach, it is not exclusively reserved for them.
Highlighting the issue of overcrowding, Shinde pointed out that pregnant women often face discomfort and potential health risks while commuting. He stressed that a separate coach would help ensure safer and more convenient travel for them.
The demand gains significance in light of several incidents where pregnant women reportedly experienced medical emergencies during train journeys, emphasising the need for improved safety measures.
