Although Maharashtra has reported the highest number of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in India, almost 95,000 devotees paid a visit to the Chaitya Bhoomi memorial in Dadar to offer their tributes to Dr BR Ambedkar on the occasion of his 66th death anniversary on Monday, December 6, stated reports.

Whilst the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had urged people to avoid visiting the memorial physically, instead pay their tributes virtually, many devotees flocked to the location.

Based on accounts, the deputy municipal commissioner (DMC), Harshad Kale who had supervised the preparations at the Chaitya Bhoomi mentioned that they had asked leaders of various communities to request their members to not visit the location.

On the other hand, assistant municipal commissioner, Kiran Dighavkar, was quoted by reports mentioning that an aggregate of 95,000 individuals went to the memorial on Monday, while the number outside was much bigger. Health camps, sanitation facilities, marshal deployment was also undertaken.

According to narratives, those who visited the Chaitya Bhoomi on Monday were reported to have reached Dadar the previous evening and spent the night at Shivaji Park. Reports claim that some protested at Shivaji Park, voicing their discontent on the lack of amenities.

As the day went underway, the number of visitors at the spot also surged. Certain reports claim that volunteers from a group created issues by raising slogans and blaming the civic authority for mismanagement and overcrowding.

The civic officials, however, refuted these claims and mentioned that enough amenities were put up in the afternoon. On Monday morning several dignitaries from the state paid a visit to the site to offer their respects.
