Earlier this year, in January 2021, the Central Railways (CR) announced Mumbai's first 'Restaurant on Wheels' project at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). This much-anticipated project could be one-of-a-kind which the people from Mumbai, nearby areas and travellers to the city can visit and enjoy with the dining experience.

As per reports, officials have awarded the tender the same and the project is expected to launch in 2022. The construction will begin later this year and the restaurant will be opened at the P D’Mello entrance of the station.

Information regarding the same was published in the Hindustan Times, where a senior official from the CR confirmed the updates. He added that a discarded rail coach will be used for the same and the coach was not yet moved to the entrance of the station. Once done, the designing and interior work would begin and it is expected to resemble the railways there. Once completed, the Restaurant on Wheels will be opened for the public in mid-2022.

The project has been planned to boost the non-fare revenue of the CR and similar approach would be implemented across other locations too. The department expects to earn INR 28 lakhs from the same. Officials from the CR have instructed the zonal railways to find out coaches for the same.

As of now, CR will be offering the coach, tracks and other necessary requirements for the project. The proposed coach will be placed near CSMT's heritage gully which also includes many other sections of the railways.

Currently, there are stalls at different railway stations in Mumbai, however, once this is operational, food lovers will be able to enjoy a seated dining experience at the station. The decision was taken two years ago to begin the project and directions were given to the zonal railways for the same. Information released about the plan states that the Restaurant on Wheels will have a seating capacity of 50 people. Authorities can utilise the space by placing chairs and tables in the open area. Moreover, the facility will also have a few parking spots available.
