Maharashtra has been facing severe heat this year and people throughout the state are suffering due to the extreme rise in the temperature. However, adding to the people's woes, the lakes supplying water to Mumbai are staring at a potential water shortage. Mumbai has seven lakes that supply water to the city and the lakes only have 10 per cent of reserve water residue.

Accordingly, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked the citizens to conserve water for the upcoming two months. The water reserve is estimated to last till July 31.  This is the lowest quantum of water that is left in the seven lakes compared to the last two years.

The water levels in the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai, i.e. Bhatsa Lake, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa Lake, Modak Sagar Lake, Tulsi Lake, and Vihar Lake, have dipped to 1.47 lakh million litres as on May 31. Meanwhile, Bhatsa and Vaitarna have combined water reserve of 1.70 lakh million litres.

Thus, Mumbai currently has a total water reserve of 3.13 lakh million litres. Earlier, BMC had imposed a 10 per cent water supply cut since the municipal corporation planned to use the water storage until July. However, the civic body has confirmed that Mumbaikars will not face an additional water supply cut despite the water shortage.
