What’s the story?

The red beacon (lal batti) placed on Mumbai mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar's official car is illegal according to the Tardeo Regional Transport Office (RTO) and they’ve issued a notice to BMC's executive engineer (traffic) stating the same.

Central Government's red beacon eligible list

According to the notification of the ministry of road transport and highways on May 1, 2017, the list mentions those eligible to use the red beacon which does not include the Mumbai mayor.

Mayor's name not included in the list

As the Mayor’s name is not included in the list, it is illegal for him to use the red beacon light on his car.

Mayor's reaction

In his defence, Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar says that the lal batti on his car is always covered and is never used.

So what do Mumbaikars think about this VIP culture being swept under the carpet? Will the Mayor give him the ‘VIP lal batti’?
