The Mumbai Monorail is set to resume operations after a prolonged suspension, with authorities awaiting final safety certification before reopening services.
The monorail has remained shut since September 2025 following a series of technical issues and the need for system upgrades. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has since undertaken extensive modernisation work, including the introduction of new indigenously built rakes and upgrades to critical systems.
According to officials, trial runs and technical evaluations have been successfully completed. The project has also received clearance from an Independent Safety Assessor (ISA), marking a significant step toward resumption.
However, operations cannot restart until a final inspection is carried out by a retired official from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety. This inspection is expected to determine whether the system meets all required safety standards for public use.
Authorities indicated that once this certification is granted, services could resume within the next few months, likely around April or May 2026.
In parallel, efforts are underway to improve connectivity and boost ridership. Plans include linking the monorail with Mumbai Metro Line 2B via a pedestrian bridge near Chembur, enabling smoother interchanges for commuters.
The restart is expected to bring relief to daily passengers and strengthen Mumbai’s urban transport network, provided all remaining approvals are secured on schedule.
