The extended section of the Mrinal Tai Gore Flyover, built to ease traffic congestion in Goregaon, will be inaugurated on Saturday morning, June 6.
This 750-meter-long flyover will directly connect the Ram Mandir and the Goregaon area and will have four lanes. The main flyover was opened for traffic in 2016. However, work on the approach arms, which are about 390 meters long on both sides of the bridge, is still ongoing. The project also includes pedestrian facilities, painting, security arrangements and soundproof walls.
After the completion of this flyover, traffic in Goregaon will become smoother and commuters will get a big relief. Initially, the cost of this project was expected to be Rs 209 crore. However, due to various difficulties, the final cost reached about Rs 248 crore.
This extended project received administrative approval in 2018 and the actual work began on March 22, 2019. The contract was awarded to a joint venture, MEPL-Gyan. According to the records of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the work was expected to be completed in 24 months.
However, the project was repeatedly delayed due to various technical issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the BMC approved a revised proposal, increasing the cost to Rs 240 crore. Later, additional work took the final cost of the project to Rs 248 crore.
A few weeks ago, a standing committee had also visited the project site. Meanwhile, Ashraf Azmi had criticized the BMC for the delay in the bridge work.
Local residents had demanded that the flyover be opened for traffic as soon as all the work was completed.
