The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 5% water cut in the city and suburbs between March 15 and April 24. Reservoir levels in seven lakes that supply water to the city are receding. Also, this decision has been taken due to the ongoing maintenance work at the water filtration plant at Bhandup.

The BMC supplies the city with 3,900 million litres of water per day (MLD), which is purified at the Bhandup Complex and the filtration plant at Pise. It is the largest treatment plant in Asia with a capacity of 2,810 MLD. Bhandup has two units capable of filtering about 1,910 MLD and 900 MLD.

An official told the Free Press Journal that the huge tanks in the filtration plant need to be cleaned before the monsoon and the work will take about a month. Meanwhile, seven lakes have a critical stock of 37%, the lowest in the last three years. The state government has already allowed the BMC to use up to 15% of excess reserves from Upper Vaitrana and Bhatsa.

On February 27, Mumbaikars faced a 15% water cut for a week after three transformers at the Pise pumping station were gutted in a fire incident. But after the completion of the work of the pumping station, the BMC had withdrawn the decision to cut water.
