To maintain law and order in the city, the Mumbai police on Tuesday, September 27, issued an order prohibiting people from taking, publishing and circulating photographs and videos of half-submerged or floating idols of Goddess Durga during or after immersions.

Issuing an official statement, the city police stated that taking such pictures can hurt religious sentiments and may disturb public peace and tranquillity.

This order will remain in effect from October 5 to 7 during the visarjan of idols in water bodies at the end of Durga Puja throughout the areas under Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation (BMC)’s jurisdiction.

Besides, the police have invoked section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in this regard and action will be taken against people who violate the order during the last three days, the official added.

Some people take photographs of the half-dissolved idols after they drift ashore during high tide or float in the lake. Similarly, the photos and videos of idols being carried by BMC workers for re-immersion which are published and circulated may hurt religious sentiments, it explained.

For those unversed, the city police had imposed a similar ban in 2019.

Goddess Durga’s idols are immersed in water bodies at the end of the 10-day Durga Puja celebrations. This year, the idol will be immersed from October 5 to October 7.
