Seat Belts Mandatory For Car Drivers, Passengers from "This" Date: Mumbai Police

For all motor vehicle drivers and passengers in vehicles, it will be mandatory for drivers and all passengers to wear seat belts while traveling otherwise action will be taken under 194 (B)(1) of Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, 2019, Police further added.

Mumbai Police on Friday, October 14, has announced mandatory use of seatbelts for car drivers and passengers from November 1.

In an official statement issued, the city police noted: "As per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, under section 194(b) (1) Whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carries passengers who are not wearing seat belts shall be punishable."


Accordingly, the Mumbai Police has given the motorists an ultimatum till November 1 to install seat belt facilities in vehicles that do not have seat belts for all commuters. However, anyone driving a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carrying passengers who are not wearing seat belts shall be liable for punishment from November 1.

Earlier, the Mumbai Police on Thursday, April 7, issued new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for two-wheeler motorists in order to crack down on helmetless drivers.
