For the last couple of days, journalists across the city have been appealing to the Maharashtra government to permit travel for them in the local trains of Mumbai.
In view of the cases of coronavirus, limited services of suburban trains are being operated in Central, Western and Harbour lines only for those employed in essential sectors including employees of state and Central governments.
However, the Mumbai Press Club has written to Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister, demanding that all journalists be allowed on local trains. Moreover, due to the nature of the work, the Mumbai Press Club has further asked Pawar to consider the request, as reporters have to traverse many places in search of stories.
Earlier, Vijay Wadettiwar, State Relief and Rehabilitation Minister had stated that journalists might be allowed to travel in the local trains soon. He further stated that a proposal has been sent to the CM Uddhav Thackeray regarding the same and that it will be passed by the State Cabinet within two days.
The operations of suburban trains, which are known as the lifeline of Mumbai, have been shut for people since March this year due to the outbreak of the coronavirus but as per sources, in the fourth phase of the unlocking, the locals may resume for the regular citizens.
