The monsoons seemed to have hit the city of Mumbai with full force as incessant rains lashed Mumbai and its surrounding areas on Tuesday morning. Initially, with strong winds, heavy rainfall continued in the city waterlogging the streets.

Moreover, as the city had been witnessed downpour for the last three days, the low-lying areas in Mumbai have been flooded as a result. Even though the residents have been relieved by the cooling rains, the city and the suburbs have experienced water-logging which has made it difficult for the people to travel to work or venture out for essential work. People who have been on the streets trying to reach a specific destination complained of the stagnant water levels on the roads.

The Santacruz weather station, representative of the suburbs in the city, reported 30.2 mm rainfall, while the Colaba bureau, representative of the island city, recorded 13.4 mm rainfall during the same period.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the Matheran hill station in neighbouring Raigad district received 93.4 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday, while the Thane-Belapur Industries Association observatory recorded 74 mm rainfall during the period. Besides, the Nashik district recorded 25.2 mm rainfall and the Kolhapur district reported 7.4 mm rainfall.

Monsoon brings with it certain diseases with can be difficult to tackle especially during a pandemic. The monsoon season in the city usually gives rise to cases of dengue, malaria and leptospirosis along with floods and waterlogging. CM Thackeray had earlier asked respective agencies to ensure proper coordination in order to tackle COVID-19 diseases along with monsoon-related diseases. The Chief Minister further urged the BMC to hold a meeting with all the agencies which include MMRDA, PWD, Metro, Mumbai Port Trust, and the Railways, to fast-track all the monsoon-related works in Mumbai.
