Mumbai witnesses light showers; More rain likely in Maharashtra

In January, the state has been plagued by low pressure areas and vapour from the sea. A low pressure belt has formed from Konkan to North-Central Maharashtra. Due to the evaporation from the sea, the cold has completely disappeared.

In the last 24 hours, torrential rains have lashed many districts in Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune, the Konkan region and central parts of the state. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall was reported at several localities in Mumbai. Borivali, Mahalaxmi, Dombivali, Kurla and a few more places saw light rainfall last night as well.

Due to the formation of the low-pressure belt from South Central Arabian Sea to Central Maharashtra, rainy weather is prevailing in the state. Therefore, the meteorological department has predicted rains in the state on Friday, January 8 and Saturday, January 9. 

According to the weather office, there is a possibility of rain and thunderstorms for the next two or three days in parts of the Konkan and interior and coastal Maharashtra including Kolhapur, Pune, and parts of Marathwada and Chandrapur.

Neighbouring areas of Thane, Raigad, Pune, Satara and Sindudurg witnessed light showers in the last 24 hrs. Some localities also reported thunderstorms and lightning. KS Hosalikar, Head of the Regional Meteorological Center in Mumbai tweeted photos of a cloudy Mumbai and wrote, "Horizon hardly visible, smog and hazy today, still I must say weather pleasant over here now."

On Thursday, January 7, light showers were recorded at some places in Konkan, Central Maharashtra and Marathwada.

In January, the state has been plagued by low-pressure areas and vapour from the sea. A low-pressure belt has formed from Konkan to North-Central Maharashtra. Due to the evaporation from the sea, the cold has completely disappeared and the minimum temperature has risen.

As a result, the maximum temperature increased in the city according to the IMD data. The Colaba station of IMD recorded a maximum temperature at 28 degree celsius, whereas the Santacruz recorded the maximum temperature at 30.7 degree celsius. The minimum temperature at Colaba and Santacruz recorded 23 and 23.4 degree celsius, respectively.

Heavy rains also lashed Shahapur disrupting public life on Thursday evening, January 7. As a result, untimely rains have also affected planted vegetables and fruits. It is said that this has caused great distress to the citizens and also to the farmers. 

The next 48 to 72 hours are crucial for farmers as thunderstorms and showers may the affect rabi crop in the harvest season. It may also affect the mango production in the coastal region, according to state officials.

According to the meteorological department, due to western cyclone, light rains are expected in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Nagar, Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli on January 8 and January 9. In Nashik, Aurangabad on January 8, while Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon likely to witness rains on January 8 and 9.0

On January 8 and 9, the maximum temperature is expected to drop in northern Maharashtra, the meteorological department said.
