Maharashtra receives 16 per cent above normal rainfall this monsoon

The state of Maharashtra has received nearly 16 per cent more rainfall than the normal average since June.

While the city and its suburbs witnessed intermittent spells of light to moderate rainfall between Monday and Tuesday, as per the Meteorological Department, the state has received nearly 16 per cent more rainfall than the normal average since June.

The state received 826.7 mm of rain from June 1 to August 17. The previous monsoon received 713.7 mm of rain during this period. Six out of the 36 districts of the state received heavy rainfall since June 1, while Yavatmal, Gondia and Akola received less rainfall.

There are seven lakes - Bhatsa, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar on Thane-Nashik belt and Tulsi and Vihar in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP) which provide water to the city of Mumbai. Out of these, Vihar and Tulsi have already started overflowing. Large lakes like Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna are almost 90 per cent full.

The Vihar lake, with a capacity of 27,698 million litres, is the second lake to overflow in the city. Earlier, the Tulsi lake which is also nestled in the SGNP had overflowed on July 28.

From the month of June to till now, the average annual rainfall is 713.7 mm. However, 826.7 mm of rainfall has been recorded this year so far. Also, Mumbai city, Mumbai suburbs, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Beed and Solapur has received more than 60 per cent rainfall.
