The catchment areas of Mumbai and its neighbouring areas including Thane have received a huge amount of rainfall in the first week of August. The water level in seven lakes and dam reservoirs which provide drinking water to Mumbai has increased by more than 50 per cent.

In 48 hours till Sunday, there has been an increase of 1,08,000 million litres in the water level. The water storage in the lakes and dam reservoirs have reached 7,08,153 million litres. Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna are the seven lakes and dam reservoirs which supply water to Mumbai.

The water storage capacity in total is 14,47,000 million litres and nearly 7.5 million litres of more water is required to fill the lakes and dams reservoirs to their full capacity. Therefore, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will continue with the announced 20 per cent water cut.

Earlier, the BMC had announced a 20 per cent water cut for Mumbaikars given the low rainfall. BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal informed that the water cut is being carried out to prevent water shortage in the future.

The water cut was to be imposed from August 1 but was deferred to August 5 due to Eid al-Adha.

Meanwhile, with heavy downpour recently, two lakes in Mumbai - Tulsi and Vihar - have started to overflow. However, lakes and dam reservoirs like Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Middle Vaitarna and Bhatsa are not yet filled.

Bhatsa lake has a storage capacity of 3,65,000 million litres and is only 51 per cent full. It provides nearly 1,850 million litres of water to Mumbai each day. Modak Sagar is 58 per cent full of its capacity while the water level Middle Vaitarna is 50 per cent followed by 29 per cent in Upper Vaitarna and 45 per cent in Tansa.
