On Thursday, August 20, the Tansa lake, which happens to be one of the seven lakes that supply water to the city of Mumbai, overflowed.

The total storage capacity of 7 dams supplying water to Mumbai is about 14.5 million litres. On Thursday, the collective water stock stood at 87.20 per cent of their total capacity. The Modak Sagar (Lower Vaitarna) overflowed earlier on Tuesday. Mumbai’s lake levels are at 90.88 per cent as on Friday morning.

The lake Tansa overflowed on July 25 last year. The year before that, in 2018, on July 17. In the year 2017, on July 18 and back in 2016, the lake started filling and flowing on August 2.

Earlier, in view of the torrential rains in Mumbai, the BMC decided to partially cut down on the water cuts imposed in the city. In the past, a 20 per cent water cut was decided to be imposed, which has now come down to 10 per cent in view of the heavy downpour.

While the urban water crisis in Mumbai has been a continual problem in the city, this year, the people of Mumbai were facing water shortage in the last couple of weeks due to the delay in the monsoons. However, with heavy rains lashing the streets of the city, several lakes overflowed or filled up to its fullest capacity that supply water to Mumbai.
