The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to partially cut down on the water cuts imposed in the city. Earlier, a 20 per cent water cut was decided to be imposed, which has now come down to 10 per cent in view of the heavy downpour.

This comes as a relief to the people of Mumbai as they would not be facing as severe a water cut. While the urban water crisis in Mumbai has been worsening, this year, the people of Mumbai were facing water shortage in the last couple of weeks due to insufficient rainfall. However, with heavy rains lashing the streets of the city, several lakes overflowed or filled up to its fullest capacity that supply water to the city.

On August 4, the lake had a storage capacity of 5 lakhs 5 thousand million litres. By August 15, the water supply had reached 10 lakhs 37 thousand million litres. Bhatsa, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar on Thane-Nashik belt and Tulsi and Vihar in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP) are the lakes which provide water to the city of Mumbai.

Every year after the end of monsoon, on October 31, the water level in all the lakes is reviewed. On October 1, a total of 14 lakhs 47 thousand 363 million litres of water is required in all the lakes.
