Following the heavy downpour in Mumbai and neighbouring areas, Modak Sagar lake which provides water to the metropolitan city has started to overflow. Modak Sagar is one of the seven lakes which supply water to Mumbaikars and it started overflowing around 9:24 PM on Tuesday.

However, the lake had overflown on July 26 last year. A few days ago, Vihar and Tulsi lake - the other two water supply source for Mumbai - had started overflowing.

The Modak Sagar lake is situated in Shahpur taluka and provides 450 million litres of water to Mumbai city. The lake has a total storage capacity of 1,28,925 million litres and it started to overflow due to which the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had to open a gate of Modak Sagar dam.

As this happened, the water level in the Middle Vaitarna dam also started rising. Earlier, the Vihar lake which is located within the boundaries of Borivali National Park also started overflowing. Due to this, the water supply crisis for Mumbai has been averted to a great extent.

This happened as Mumbai, Thane and other surrounding areas receive heavy rainfall which has created havoc in the parts of the city due to flooding.

As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), out of the two lakes which supply water and are in the area of the civic body, 'Vihar Lake' started overflowing on August 5 around 10.00 pm. Last year, the lake with a capacity of 27,698 million litres of water started overflowing on July 31. In 2018, the lake started overflowing on July 16.
