In a mysterious case of animal abuse, nineteen cats have died in a building in Hill Garden Bungalows in Thane. The Police had earlier registered a suspected case of poisoning on Saturday, however, eight more cats died on Sunday and Monday.

According to a report by Times of India, resident Pooja Joshi, who registered the complaint stated that she was harassed along with other animal lovers who lived in the building in the past, for feeding the stray cats in the compound. The Animal Welfare Board was also made aware of the situation, as per Joshi.

The FIR states that the cats who died were perfectly healthy, however, suddenly showed signs of weakness and fatigue along with vomiting before dying. This indicates a possible case of poisoning by someone who lives in the area.

Mitesh Jain, honorary district animal welfare officer, speaking to the media stated that two cats were taken for postmortem adding that after the preliminary report is made accessible, more information will be made available regarding this alleged act of animal cruelty.

Feeding stray animals have been a point of contention in several housing societies with activists coming to the streets stating that people should be allowed to feed the local animals in the areas that they reside in, for showing kindness and compassion also happens to be a basic tenet of the Indian Constitution.
