Mumbai’s temperature has been fluctuating dramatically since the beginning of December.

After experiencing a significant dip on Monday morning, December 9 with recording 13.7 degrees Celsius, 5.1 degree below normal, the city has witnessed a notable rise in the mercury for past two days.

With mercury rising 7 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s Santacruz observatory has reported 20 degrees Celsius, on Wednesday morning, December 11. Meanwhile, the mercury rose by 5 degree Celsius early Tuesday morning, December 10, at 18 degrees Celsius.

It is pertinent to note that this is just days after the city recorded its coldest December day in nine years.

According to IMD, the minimum temperature, measured at 5:30 am on Wednesday, reached 20 degrees Celsius, while Colaba registered a relatively higher reading of 22 degrees Celsius.

Similarly, on Tuesday, reached 18 degrees Celsius, while Colaba registered a relatively higher reading of 20.8 degrees Celsius.

Despite the increase from the previous morning, minimum temperatures at both weather stations remained close to normal values.

IMD said the city’s scorching temperatures the previous week - when the maximum reached 37.3 degree Celsius, the highest December reading in 13 years, and the minimum touched 25.5 degree Celsius on Wednesday - were due to the combined effects of Cyclone Fengal and easterly winds, which caused a considerable temperature rise.

On Tuesday, the maximum temperature recorded at Santacruz was 33.8 degree Celsius, one degree above normal. Colaba touched 32, which was at normal value.

On December 11, the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app reported in its latest Mumbai weather updates that the city’s air quality remained in the 'moderate' category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 131 at 9:05 am.

As per the SAMEER app dashboard, many areas across Mumbai showed 'moderate' AQI. Bandra Kurla Complex recorded 'moderate' air quality with an AQI of 175. Borivali, Chembur, Kandivali and Worli recorded 'moderate' air quality with an AQI of 108, 142, 116 and 130, respectively. Colaba recorded 'good' air quality, with an AQI of 126.

On the other hand, Navi Mumbai recorded air quality in the 'moderate' category with an AQI of 142, while Thane registered a 'moderate' AQI of 111.
