In a welcoming news for Mumbaikars, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that there will be no water cuts in the city till the next monsoon.

This development comes as the water levels in the seven lakes supplying water in Mumbai is sufficient.

As on 6 am, Thursday, September 28, water capacity reached 99.6 per cent, which amounts to 14.34 lakh million litres. Of the seven water bodies, Upper Vaitarna, Modak, Tansa, Bhatsa, Tulsi and Vehar lakes have breached 99 per cent capacity currently. Meanwhile, Middle Vaitarna has reached upto 97 per cent.

This is higher than last year, which was 98 per cent as on September 28, 2022, while the stock in 2021 was 99.11 per cent.

It comes at a time when there is a possibility of more rain in the city amid yellow alert in Mumbai and neighboring districts. With this, the city is most likely to witness more rainfall, indicating that there will likely be no water cut in the city till June 2024.

Officials had said that the non-monsoons period calculated by the hydraulic engineer department is from October 1 to June 15 and the dry patch in August was a cause for concern. However, now there is no need to impose cut.

In August, BMC officials had said that it may have to apply water cuts if lake levels do not reach around 100 per cent by October 1. The BMC supplies 3900 million liters of water every day through the seven lakes to Mumbai.
