After experiencing cool and pleasant weather for nearly two weeks, Mumbai is likely to witness a gradual spike in both minimum and maximum temperatures this week ending January on warmer note. However, the IMD has indicated that temperatures will again drop in February.

IMD officials stated that the city is experiencing a rise in mercury levels, owing to a change in the wind patterns, triggered by an anti-cyclonic development.

As on January 27, IMD’s Santacruz observatory registered a temperature of 34.4 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees above normal while the coastal observatory located in Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 31.4 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, January 28, a maximum temperature was recorded at 34.2 and 33 degrees Celsius at Santacruz and Colaba observatory; whereas, the minimum temperatures were 18.4 and 21 degrees Celsius.

While this drop and rise in temperatures is a typical winter phenomenon, Mumbai is experiencing a typically warmer winter this year. The city will continue to see a temperature difference of about 16 degrees Celsius between day and night.

For perspective, on January 12, Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 35.7 degrees Celsius, making it its warmest January day in the past seven years.

A couple of days into February, it is expected that the temperatures to drop to the pleasant and low temperatures recording like mid-January. It also expected to see a fall in the day temperatures below 30 degrees.

According to IMD Mumbai scientist Sushma Nair, next weekend's weather may well resemble the pleasant conditions experienced last week. Corroborating these forecasts, the IMD predicts maximum temperatures in the range of 27-28 degrees Celsius and minimums as low as 18 degrees Celsius on February 1 and 2, with foggy mornings also likely around this time.
