Mumbai recorded a colder-than-usual morning on Wednesday, November 19. It was the coldest November morning in at least 10 years. The Santacruz Observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius, nearly five notches below the average.
This is the first time since 2014 that such a low minimum temperature has been recorded in November. This shows the severity of the unseasonal cold wave that has hit the city. In comparison, the Colaba Observatory near the coast recorded a temperature of 21.6 degrees Celsius, which highlights the temperature difference between the coastal and interior parts of Mumbai.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), winter has arrived early in Mumbai this November. The minimum temperature in the city has been below 20 degrees Celsius since November 9. The temperature has been below normal for the past several days and Wednesday was the lowest recorded.
This is the coldest November morning in Mumbai in at least 10 years, according to a report by the Indian Express quoting IMD data. The previous minimum temperature was recorded on November 11, 2016, at 16.3 degrees Celsius. In 2024, the temperature was 16.5 degrees.
Meteorologists say that winter has not yet begun. According to the IMD classification, the official winter in Mumbai is in the months of January and February. The current cold is due to the persistent northerly and northeasterly winds blowing from central India and the peninsular region. Due to these winds, cold and dry air reaches Mumbai, causing a temporary drop in temperature.
Furthermore, in the western Maharashtra belt, Satara reported hazy weather conditions with a minimum temperature of 12 degrees Celsius and 43 per cent humidity. Mahabaleshwar, the hill station, remained the coolest in the region with a minimum of 12 degrees Celsius and no rainfall recorded.
Minimum temperature to increase in the next few days
According to IMD estimates, this cold will not last long. The minimum temperature will again rise above 20 degrees Celsius in the coming days, as the effect of cold winds will reduce.
On November 2, the maximum temperature had dropped to 27 degrees Celsius. However, meteorologists clarified that the drop was not due to seasonal winds but due to unseasonal rains in the first week of November.
