Pharmacies across the country, including in Mumbai, have called for a nationwide shutdown on Wednesday, May 20, in protest against illegal online medicine sales (e-pharmacies) and unethical business competition by large corporate companies.
Around 1.25 million chemists and druggists across India, including nearly 125,000 in Maharashtra, are expected to participate fully in the protest.
The protest has been officially announced by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists and the Maharashtra State Chemists and Druggists Association.
According to the associations, the administration has shown extreme negligence in addressing these issues, leaving medicine retailers with no option but to resort to agitation.
The organizations have also alleged that “drug mafia” gangs involved in manufacturing counterfeit medicines are currently active in the country and the state.
Due to the shutdown, patients across the country are likely to face major inconvenience, as many medical stores remain closed, making it difficult for people to obtain essential medicines.
