The Maharashtra State Government has just replaced Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Commissioner Annasaheb Misal with Abhijit Bangar. Misal has been criticized as the coronavirus infections in Navi Mumbai has been rising with the positive cases now crossing 11,000. He took over from Ramaswamy N as the NMMC Commissioner in July 2019.

Meanwhile, Bangar took charge of his post as the Commissioner of the NMMC today (July 14). The State Government previously issued a transfer order for Misal, although it was later withdrawn.

As for Bangar, he is an IAS officer belonging to the 2008 batch and was serving as the Additional Commissioner of the Nagpur Division and has previously worked as the Chief of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for just over a year.

It is alleged that Misal’s transfer order was halted due to political pressure, though there’s no evidence of this as of yet. As for Bangar, he is known for having confrontations with politicians as well as elected representatives, which is usually the hallmark of a good officer.

Navi Mumbai was in a complete lockdown over the past 10 days, though cases have not really subsided. Perhaps a different strategy to combat the virus is the need of the hour for the residents of Navi Mumbai to safely reopen again.

There’s some good news coming from Dharavi where the active cases have now gone below 100 as it reported six new COVID-19 cases as of today. This is clearly a good news story for the region considering that Mumbai recorded a total of 1,158 fresh cases in the same timeframe.
