On Thursday, May 5, a rotational load shedding was imposed on emergency basis across Navi Mumbai (Vashi to Panvel) as 400 KV transmission corridor along Kharghar-Talegaon was tripped. Owing to this, the residents faced major inconvenience amid sweltering weather.

According to Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) official, due to the issue in the transmission line, Vashi circle had a shortfall of 150MW power. In order to distribute the shortage among every node, all substations took a rotational load shedding of close to one hour.

On the other hand, residents complained of power cuts for over two hours.

At around 6.20 am, there was a technical issue in the Talegaon-Kharghar line. Till 10 am, there were no issues but after that, as the commercial institutions started their machineries, and due to the increase in heat, the demand for power increased. However, the technical failure was rectified by evening.

Kharghar, Nerul, Belapur, Koparkhairane, Bonkode, Mahape and Turbhe faced power cuts, official added.

On last Wednesday, Mumbai saw four power cuts that ranged from one at Mumbadevi for 30 minutes owing to a 11KV feeder fault in the morning, to another at Shivaji Park in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, a similar grid failure was observed in 2020 in MMR after a line failure due to overload on the remaining power grid. At that point of time, Mumbai suffered its worst blackout, bringing the entire city to a grinding halt, it was the congestion and overburdened transmission network that was cited as the root cause for this massive power failure.
