On Tuesday, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, along with boats and a helicopter were sent to save those stranded in villages and the banks of a river in Maharashtra’s Latur, as incessant rains hit the area throughout the day, reported the PTI.

Based on the report, an official elaborated that of the 40 people stranded alongside the banks of river Manjara in Sarsa village, 25 have been saved through boats and efforts were underway to get the remaining to safety. The official added that three people deserted along the river basin in Renapur tehsil’s Digol Deshmukh area have been saved.

Sakeb Usmani, District Disaster Management Officer elaborated that from the state’s Irrigation Department, three personnel were caught in the barrage at Ghansargaon village. The NDRF delegation and the helicopter are being utilized to help the local authorities in the rescue operations, highlighted the narrative.

Officials went on to add that of the 10 tehsils, six and from the 60 revenue mandals in Latur, 30 have witnessed incessant rains, causing flooding of rivulets and streams. This phenomenon prompted the authorities to discharge 70,845.30 cusecs (cubic foot per second) of water post opening the 18 gates of a dam in Dhanegaon in Keh tehsil into the Manjara river.

In the past 24 hours, Latur has attained 66.09 mm of rainfall, with heavy rains and thunderstorms in tehsils like Ausa, Ahmedpur, Chakur, Jalkoat, Latur and Udgir, resulting in the disconnection of many villages, stated officials according to the account.

Additionally, many revenue mandals have attained more than 65 mm of rainfall in this period they stated, taking the aggregate rainfall in Latur this season to 906mm that is nearly 109% of the yearly average. Tandulja and Murud have attained the maximum rainfall of 127.8mm, trailed by Tondar at 103mm and Chakur at 101.3mm, officials said, through the report. 

Apart from this, the Indian Meteorological Department has cautioned of heavy rains in the next two days too.
