The newly constructed Bandra East skywalk opened to the public on Monday, January 26, 2026. The opening came a few days after Western Railway (WR) approved access from the 12-metre-wide Churchgate-end foot overbridge. The inauguration was carried out by Ashish Shelar, Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburban District.

The structure opened to the public after receiving all necessary safety certifications, structural stability clearances, and approvals from railway authorities. The skywalk measures 680 metres in total length, with an average width of 5.40 metres and four stair access points. It is equipped with two automated escalators and 14 CCTV cameras to ensure security.

The skywalk was built to improve pedestrian safety and convenience in one of Mumbai’s busiest areas. It will make easy movement between Bandra Court, the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the MHADA office, and the District Collector’s office. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) oversaw the development, using high-quality materials to ensure the structure is strong and modern.

Several key officials attended the inauguration, including Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, Deputy Commissioner (Infrastructure) Girish Nikam, and Assistant Commissioner of H-East Ward. Engineers who completed the project on schedule received recognition from senior officials. Executive Engineer Namdev Ravkale, Assistant Engineer Prashant Jawale, and Junior Engineer Amit Dasurkar were among those honoured for their work.

During the event, Ashish Shelar said the government is committed to improving suburban infrastructure in Mumbai. It connects the Bandra East railway station directly to the pedestrian bridge and the Western Express Highway. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar highlighted that the skywalk would be particularly useful for commuters travelling between the train station, MHADA office, and other commercial areas.
