The Maharashtra government have imposed more restrictions as the state reported a massive jump in daily cases of coronavirus disease at 5,368, while its tally of Omicron infections rose to 450. However, Mumbai reported more than 3,600 new cases on the same day.

In a revised order late on Thursday night, December 30, the Maharashtra government announced fresh guidelines on attendance at weddings, social, political, religious events and funerals.

Here are the latest guidelines to be followed:
  • Cultural, religious, political events and weddings can be held in the presence of only 50 people.
  • 20 people have been allowed to attend the funeral.
  • A curfew has been imposed on the tourist spot. The local administration is allowed to impose strict restrictions that attract a large crowd of people such as beaches, open grounds, etc, the competent authority may as deemed appropriate, impose section 144.
  • Any person contravening this order shall be punishable under section 188 of Indian Penal Code 1860 in addition to the penal provision under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 and National Disaster Management Act 2005 and other legal provisions as applicable.

Earlier, on December 29, the Maharashtra government issued guidelines for the upcoming New Year celebrations amid the rising COVID-19 cases and the threat of the Omicron variant.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police also introduced prohibitory orders under CrPC section 144 in the island city from December 30 to January 7 after Mumbai reported a huge spike in the fresh cases.
