Last month, four Assistant Municipal Commissioners also known as ward officers were appointed across four administrative wards.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now appointed Aniruddha Kulkarni as ward officer for P/South (Goregaon) and Prafulla Tambe for R/Central (Borivali) wards.
Until now, the posts of ward officers in 14 administrative wards were vacant, and executive engineers were functioning as in-charges. These latest appointments, made on the recommendations of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), mean that only two wards still lack full-time officers, a senior official said.
Earlier, on October 3, the BMC had appointed ward officers in B (Dongri), C (Marine Lines), F/South (Parel), and R/South (Kandivali) wards.
The recruitment process for 14 ward officer posts, announced in June 2021, was delayed for over two years due to legal challenges from ineligible candidates. The Supreme Court later permitted the civic body to proceed with the appointments. Despite this, a contempt petition was filed due to further delays. The MPSC eventually finalised the list, issued appointment letters in November 2024, and completed training last month.
During the interim, senior engineers managed ward operations without formal administrative training, raising concerns about delays and weak supervision.
