With Maharashtra being one of the most affected states amid the COVID-19 pandemic, on Friday, January 7, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar stated that a lockdown will not be imposed in Mumbai, reports mentioned. Instead, a mini-lockdown with some restrictions will be put in force soon, she said, claimed accounts. 

News agency ANI quoted Pednekar saying, "No decision yet on weekend curfew. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a review meeting (via video conferencing) with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray this evening on the COVID-19 situation".

Pednekar further added that while the Chief Minister doesn't think a lockdown should be imposed people are not serious and are not wearing masks. She urged citizens to follow the COVID-19 SOPs. "Today, there could be a decision on seating capacity to be allowed for restaurants, hotels etc," Pednekar said, reported ANI. 

According to narratives, Pednekar remarked that the new guidelines with restrictions are likely to be issued by 7 pm on Friday. She also threw light upon the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) preparedness to tackle the surge in cases. She elaborated on how the civic authority is equipped with 22,000 beds as well as 7,000 ICU beds.

On Thursday, January 6, the island city reported 20,181 new coronavirus cases along with four fatalities. Out of these total positive patients, 85 per cent are asymptomatic. Additionally, based on a report by the news agency ANI the civic body remarked that Dharavi reported 107 new COVID-19 cases which are stated to be the highest ever spike in a day. 

Similarly, on Thursday, state public health minister, Rajesh Tope was reported to have mentioned that whilst curbs were being assessed, there are no plans on shutting Mumbai local trains. Adding that a lockdown was not under consideration, cited reports.
