Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporators on Thursday moved a no-confidence motion against Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on allegations of misusing her position. The BJP has alleged irregularities in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and failing to handle the COVID-19 crisis.

An urgent meeting has been requested under section 36 (H) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act of 1888 in order to move a no-confidence motion against the mayor. The same was tabled by the BJP after taking the final decision and holding discussions with all opposition parties.

Earlier, the BJP has alleged that the mayor used her position to award a contract to a firm registered in the name of her son Saiprasad Pednekar. Meanwhile, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had also said that there was a conflict of interest regarding a firm.

BJP leader Prabhakar Shinde informed that corruption is rampant in the municipal corporation under the garb of “Bhojan Se Kafan Tak” and accused the mayor of not addressing the issue since the last six months.

“The price of distributing ‘khichadi’ was ₹40 and the NGO was given ₹15. However, the cover bag was sold by the BMC for ₹6,700. We sent letters and protested too. The patients suffering from coronavirus are being looted in Mumbai. However, the mayor never held a meeting on the issue. She even cancelled the standing committee meeting,” Shinde said.

On Wednesday, Pednekar was tested positive for the coronavirus but was asymptomatic. The Shiv Sena leader informed that she has placed herself under self-quarantine. As a precautionary measure, all members of her family have also undergone COVID-19 test.
