On Friday, June 18, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar in order to provide relief to the citizens of Mumbai informed that the property tax will not be hiked in Mumbai till the situation with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic improves.

Moreover, news agency ANI quoted the Mumbai Mayor stating, "There will be no hike in Property tax in Mumbai till the Covid situation continues. We don't know how long will it take but till then we will not burden Mumbaikars by increasing the property tax,"

The development came after Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proposed a hike in property tax. Pednekar rejected the proposal further stating that the citizens are already facing financial difficulties due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and the subsequent lockdowns.

Last year too, the state cabinet decided to not go for property-value assessment, leading to no revision in property tax during the financial year. A hike of around 17 per cent was expected last year.

Earlier, the BMC, in order to meet its property tax collection target for 2020-21 had started cracking down on property tax defaulters by attaching their movable assets and disconnecting water supply and sewers.

On Sunday, March 14, the civic body confiscated the BMW car of a real estate developer from Chembur for property tax dues of INR 38 lakhs. The car was released after the developer paid INR 19 lakh.

Moreover, the civic body also sealed the office of another real estate developer in Chembur for defaulting on payment of INR 1.1 crores. In addition, the water connections of Solitaire Corporate Park and Vertex Building were disconnected and sewers were blocked in the Andheri area.
