The civic body of Navi Mumbai, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued notices to 26 arrears for confiscation of property.

According to sources, these arrears have to pay a tax of INR 5 crores. If the amount is not collected within 21 days of the notice being served, their property will be sold at auction.

Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar had earlier directed officials to issue notice to the arrears of property tax. Moreover, he added that legal action will have to be taken if the arrears are neglecting to pay property tax even after announcing Abhay Yojana on behalf of the civic body in order to provide relief to the citizens.

Meanwhile, amidst the outbreak of the coronavirus and the surge in COVID-19 cases in India, several daily wage labourers find themselves forced out of the urban centres. Moreover, with job loss and pay cuts, because of the economic crisis from the resurgence of more fatal variants of the coronavirus, the focus is again on tenants, who may not be able to pay their monthly rentals.

On the other hand, the NMMC held the third special vaccination drive for students going abroad for higher studies on June 16. This decision was taken as the civic body received requests from a large section of students who could not come for the vaccination in the earlier two sessions.
