In good news for the police personnel, no fresh COVID-19 positive case has been reported among the personnel working in Maharashtra Police in the past 24 hours. 

However, unfortunately, one of the police personnel has died due to coronavirus. The total number of police personnel succumbed to COVID-19 has risen to 34. 

On Sunday, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said that the Maharashtra Police had suffered the most casualties in the fight against COVID-19. Around 3,000 police personnel and officers have been tested positive for the coronavirus or COVID-19 in Maharashtra and 30 of them have died.

Deshmukh said that it was unfortunate that police personnel have a high number of fatalities. The frontline workers are at risk of contracting to the coronavirus. Moreover, the state Home Minister informed that around 9,671 prisoners have been released on temporary bail. 

Earlier, the high-level committee appointed by the Maharashtra government on directives of the Supreme Court decided to release 50 per cent of inmates in Maharashtra’s jails. There are nearly 35,239 prisoners across jails in Maharashtra. 

As of June 8, the number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra has increased to 88,528 while the death toll in the state has touched 3,169. In Mumbai alone, the number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 50,085 and the death toll is over 1,550.
