The Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on Monday, October 14, gave a green signal to name Maharashtra State Skills University (MSSU) after Ratan Tata, the former chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons. It will be now known as Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skills University.
This is one of the many decisions taken by the cabinet in its recent meetings, even as the state prepares for imminent assembly elections. Soon after the veteran industrialist and philanthropist passed away, the Maharashtra Cabinet also passed a proposal to request the Centre to award the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award, to Ratan Tata.
MSSU, which is located in Mumbai, was established in 2022. It is the first government-run skill university offering multiple skill-oriented courses along with training for entrepreneurship for interested students.
It offers a wide range of degree and diploma programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
MSSU is enabled with state-wide jurisdiction, allowing it to take professional, industry-oriented courses to the interiors of Maharashtra and also encouraging entrepreneurship among youth in rural set-ups.
Ratan Tata passed away on October 9 at the age of 86 in the ICU ward of Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital.
Additionally, Maharashtra minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said on Friday that the Nature Interpretation Centre inaugurated at Moharli in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) will be named after the legendary industrialist. He added that a memorial will also be constructed for Tata in Chandrapur.
