The Education department has decided to incorporate traffic rules and road safety measures as part of their everyday classes in schools for the students studying in the state schools.

Last month, the directorate of primary education had issued a circular asking its officials to ensure that students in schools across the state learn about the basic traffic rules and road safety to raise awareness. This came into effect after a Pune RTO made a proposal to the directorate of primary education.

In a hope to raise responsible citizens, the department has asked teachers to make it a part of their "everyday teaching", instead of limiting the awareness about road safety. Hence, the teachers would incorporate the traffic rules and regulations in academic lessons.

As per the circular, a group of resource persons, consisting of teachers and government officials will be trained by the state education department and the officials from the regional transport offices (RTOs) this month. The resource persons would then train teachers in their respective districts who will go on to train students.

“Teachers should include concepts while conducting their regular classes. In the current situation, since education is happening online, the training should also be done in the digital mode,” states the circular.

In line with current remote learning format, the department will set up a resource group comprising primary and secondary education officers, civic officials and four enthusiastic teachers. This group will be trained through video-conferencing by education and transport department officials in the second and third week of this month. The group will then impart a day’s training for at least one teacher from each school in the district. The deputy director of education in each district will select interested teachers ahead of a state-level training session.
