The Yatra of Khandoba Deva, the revered patron deity of Maharashtra, witnessed a remarkable gathering of around four lakh devotees in Jejuri. The procession, carrying the sacred idol of Khandoba Mhalsadevi, commenced with great enthusiasm as devotees eagerly gathered to be part of this auspicious event. A few reports published in the media stated that the massive crowd eventually led to an unfortunate stampede. However, this has been denied by the officials who stated that there was no stampede.

Clarification from the officials

The unfortunate occurrence at a temple in Jejuri happened on Monday, when four devotees suffered minor injuries after slipping while waiting in a queue to offer prayers. The incident took place at a temple where a large number of people had gathered to seek blessings and participate in the sacred rituals. The district administration clarified that there was no stampede, and the injuries sustained were minor. Swift medical attention was provided to the injured individuals, emphasizing the commitment to the safety and well-being of all devotees during such religious events.

The Yatra and the Incident

At one o'clock in the afternoon, under the direction of Peshwa Inamdar, the procession set off for the Karha river, where the idol's ritualistic bath was to take place. There was enthusiasm in the air, however, due to the larger-than-usual crowd, the procession faced significant delays, leading to immense gathering and a stampede-like-sitation all three gates of the Khandoba Fort. Despite the challenge posed, officials managed the situation and a few members suffered  injuries and fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident.

Injured Devotees

Identified as Mauli Malhar More (25), Vishal Rajendra More (23), Mayank Sachin Kadam (13), and Nilesh Arun More (30), these men were from from Khandoba. These injured individuals, known for playing the clarinet and drum during ceremonies, were rushed to Anandi Life Line Hospital in Jejuri for treatment. Additionally, two women sustained minor injuries as they were pushed into the crowd near the Atre bridge while passing through the road.

Factors Contributing to the Crowded Yatra

The Yatra coincided with Bhar Somvati, resulting in a significant increase in the number of devotees, particularly from the Koli community, who travelled from Mumbai to participate in the ceremonies. Moreover, disruptions in agricultural activities due to inadequate rainfall brought many people to Jejuri, seeking solace and blessings.
