Omicron Scare: BMC resumes these Jumbo COVID-19 centres in Mumbai

Though the daily COVID-19 cases are under control as Mumbai on Sunday, December 5, reported 213 positive cases, taking the total tally to 7,63,835. While, the city logged just one death taking the total death toll at 16,349.

With Omicron making its presence felt in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to activate 10 jumbo COVID-19 centres.

At present, five jumbo COVID-19 centres are operating in Mumbai, which include Byculla, Mulund, Worli, Dahisar, Goregaon. However, BMC said that five new functional jumbo centres will be added to its existing centres.

According to reports, eight cases of Omicron, the new strain of coronavirus, has been detected in Maharashtra. Of which, one case was found to be detected in Dombivali.

The civic body also mentioned that its facilities would have 13,466 beds for patients infected with the virus. These beds have oxygen and ventilator facilities.

The number of beds available at various jumbo facilities is as follows:

BKC: 2,328

Malad: 2,200

NESCO, Goregaon Phase-1: 2,221

Kanjurmarg: 2,000

Sion: 1,500

NESCO Gorgaon Phase-2: 1,500

Richardson and Cruddas (RC), Byculla: 1,000

Richardson and Cruddas, Mulund: 1,708

Dahisar, Kanderpada Check Naka: 700

The arrangement was put in place to deal with any unexpected increase in the number of patients in Mumbai, the BMC additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani told reporters.
