Coronavirus Pandemic: 15 new positive cases in Maharashtra; total number increases to 89

Keeping the critical condition of the state in mind, Uddhav Thackeray-led government has decided to shut down Mumbai local train services on all the three lines. Further BEST buses will only function for essential services.

Over the last 24 hours, the number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra has increased to 89  Reports state that 15 new cases tested positive in a day along with one death observed. So far, two deaths have been observed, both in the city of Mumbai and have been of people who had additional ailments.

The second death reported yesterday was of a 68-year-old man, who had returned from the Philippines. He also had other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes and was admitted at a private hospital in Mumbai, on developing the acute respiratory distress syndrome.

The situation in India has become worse over the last few days. With an increasing number of COVID19+ cases and deaths, the government is taking necessary measures to reduce the same. Keeping the same in mind, a Janta Curfew was observed on March 22, 2020. Following which the Government of Maharashtra also declared Sec 144 across the state, ensuring that the people get out of the house, only when in need. 

Mumbai local train services were suspended in Mumbai from Monday and BEST buses will be functional only for essential services. Flights arriving to Mumbai from International destinations have been stopped starting midnight and every passenger who has arrived before Monday, March 23, 2020, has been placed under mandatory quarantine for 14 days. 

The government has also sealed the borders with the state of Goa, to ensure no spread of the virus and Health Minister Rajesh Tope stated that if necessary, the government will also look at sealing borders with other states. 

Currently (as of March 23, 2020 - 12:00 PM) 89 cases in Maharashtra have tested positive. Here's the breakdown.
