With onion prices on the rise, the Central Government has launched a special scheme to provide onions to consumers at subsidised rates. Under this initiative, mobile vans will distribute onions across various areas of Mumbai at prices lower than the market rate.
Scheme Rolled Out in Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad
The government has started selling onions at INR 24 per kg in Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. Around 25 tonnes of onions from the buffer stock will be sold in these cities through cooperative organisations such as NCCF, NAFED, and the Central Warehousing Corporation. Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi flagged off the mobile vans in Delhi.

Similar initiatives will soon be rolled out in other cities as well. The scheme was implemented last year too. According to senior NCCF officials, the aim is to sell approximately 10 tonnes of onions daily through this effort. In Mumbai, citizens can now buy onions at discounted rates from mobile vans.
