A severe water-cut in the city can be experienced with only 27 per cent of water in the reservoir. Moreover, due to poor rainfall in catchment areas, the city's lakes which supply water will have a combined stock of 91 per cent at the end of monsoon unlike regular monsoon, where the lakes are full till September end. The 7 lakes that supply water to Mumbai are Bhatsa, Tulsi, Vihar, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa and Upper Vaitarna.

It was alleged by opposition leader of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Ravi Raja that even after this scarcity, BMC will announce it officially only after elections.

Also, due to evaporation, water harvesting is decreasing which appears to have escalated this discrepancy. By the end of April last year, 40 per cent water was available in the reservoirs. Since the beginning of April 2019, there are insufficient reserves.
