Cyclone Tauktae : IMD issues orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar

In the view of Cyclone Tauktae, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and warned of heavy rains at isolated places – Thane and Palghar -- with strong winds on Monday, May 17.

Mumbai received heavy rainfall with gusty winds on Monday, as the very severe cyclonic storm Tauktae will pass close from the Mumbai coast towards Gujarat.

Head of SID at the Climate Research and Services Pune, KS Hosalikar tweeted, "Mumbai much much windy now, Overcast Sky, now moderate rains and can pick up soon. No water logging so far."

Besides, the IMD has forecasted that moderate to intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 75-85 kmph is likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Ratnagiri during the next three hours.

Meanwhile, on its Sunday bulletin, for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, the IMD issued an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places), and a red alert for Raigad (extremely heavy rain at isolated places).

However, on Sunday, May 16, there was no significant impact of the cyclone in Mumbai except for a few complaints of tree collapsing and rain in some parts of the city and no untoward incident was reported.

Cyclone Tautke has caused economic damage in many places. However, it is seen that the administration has taken great precautions to avoid loss of life. NDRF, disaster management teams have been deployed along the coast of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigad in the wake of cyclone Tautkae. Also, the citizens of the coast have been evacuated to safer places.

The IMD has also issued a warning for fishermen near coastal areas. Fishing operations over east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea and along and off Kerala-Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra coasts have been completed suspended. Fishing operations over the northeast Arabian Sea and along and off Gujarat coast have been suspended since May 17.

Moreover, the BMC has instructed people not to go out of their homes and to stay away from beaches. In addition, the civic body has also suspended the vaccination drive on May 17.
