Six months into this year, 40,000 conflicts on the traffic e-challans were brought to light by the citizens. Out of these, approximately, 10% were genuine. On examining these claims, reports state that it was understood that over 200 vehicles are using fake number plates. Owing to this, the concerned department has lodged complaints on 17 individuals over these false registration numbers.

If motorists are found to be disregarding traffic rules, through an automated process, e-challans are sent to them. However, there could be scope for error, confess some officials. Reports mention that till June 30, the authorities received 39,950 complaints of wrong e-challans being sent to them.

Upon verifying these, the department is said to have revoked 4,105 e-challans. Additionally, details about 241 vehicles using fake number plates have also been added to their database. Officials elaborated on this saying that when these fake number plates come with the purview of the authority’s machines that make the e-challans, they will be grabbed.

Of the 17 cases of fake registration numbers, three are stolen automobiles, two are non-registered, whilst 12 had a fake number even though they were registered.

Officials are of the opinion that fake number plates are used by those who either steal vehicles to commit a crime or those who hope to avoid an e-challan. Similarly, wrong e-challans are sent in some cases, because people make use of fancy number plates.

According to officials, 8,000-10,000 vehicles are e-challaned in a day. If those fined by e-challans believe they have been sent, the wrong one, the matter is checked by the authorities, state reports.
