Over the last year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken down over 7,500 illegal hoardings across the city, stated a report by the Indian Express.

According to the civic authority’s data, nearly 600 police complaints were filed and 31 FIRs related to illegal hoardings were registered in the last year. Information from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, elucidates that an aggregate of 7,553 illegal banners and posters that were put on trees, light poles etc were taken down.

The civic authority’s law department is claimed to have filed 115 cases for violation of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act (MMC), 2008. The act mentions that the civic body doesn’t allow the putting up of banners and posters after the Bombay High Court order in 2013.

Based on the report, the BMC states that 598 police complaints have been filed against the violations, in 31 instances FIRs have been lodged for putting illicit posters and banners.

Amey Ghole, a Shiv Sena corporator received the said information after he moved a notice of motion, pressing actions against the unlawful posters and banners, illegally put on trees. On Tuesday, the Garden Department of the BMC replied that they routinely take action against the posters.

A BMC official, said that majority of the banners and posters are birthday or political wishes, cited the report.

Additionally, officials also elaborated those police complaints are filed under the Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 1995 through which the perpetrator can be fined Rs 2,000 or be imprisoned for three months or both. On the other hand, through the MMC Act, the lawbreaker can be fined Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 for putting the unlawful banners.
