The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 10 per cent water cut in the areas under its jurisdiction from today, June 27.

This move by the civic body comes due to insufficient rainfall and inadequate water stock in the seven dams and lakes, which supplies water to Mumbai. Also, last week, the BMC had hinted at water cut owing to no heavy rainfall being recorded yet over the catchment area lakes that supply potable water to the city.

Moreover, in a release, it also said that besides the city and its suburbs, the 10 per cent cut will also be enforced in areas falling under neighbouring Thane and Bhiwandi Municipal Corporations and some villages, which receive water supply from BMC, till water stock improves in the lakes.

Highlighting that the June rainfall has been about 70 per cent less than the average showers recorded during the month in the previous year, civic officials have requested residents to cooperate and use water judiciously during this period.

As per BMC data, the seven lakes have 1,41,387 million litres of water or 9.77 per cent on June 24, against the full capacity, which is around 14,47,363 million litres. Meanwhile, last year, during the same time, water stock was at 15.54 per cent with 2,24,894 million litres, while in 2020 the water stock was 1,44,737 million litres.

Reports further stated that the water level in Tansa is at 5.46 percent. At Modak Sagar, 36.52% of water stock is available, Middle Vaitarna 9.31%, Upper Vaitarna has 0%, Bhatsa 8.71%, Vehar 13.83% and Tulsi has 26.00% of useful water level.

It is pertinent to note that 3,750 million litres of water is supplied every day to Mumbaikars.
